Incidental Findings are medical or psychiatric conditions that are discovered unintentionally. The works included in the exhibition embody the title in both literal and metaphorical ways – yielding clues and evoking surprise elements after careful examination.
This exhibition celebrates a selection of highlights from the gallery’s history, while introduces perspectives by artists new to the program. The concept of Incidental Findings is to encourage patient study of the works on view.
Barry Frydlender’s photographs, for example, appear seamless at first glance. Upon closer inspection it becomes evident that they are stitched together from dozens or even hundreds of individual shots. When viewing Michal Chelbin’s presumably innocent teenage girls, it takes a short while to realize these adolescents are wearing the same uniform – in prison, in Ukraine. And a pair of prints by Sharon Ya’ari of the same Tel Aviv street scene – one color and the other in black and white – was taken on the same day at the same time. While the black and white print bleakly portrays a rundown building, the one in color portrays the same scene as decorative and lush.
Summer hours: Tuesday to Friday, noon to 5pm.
